Homeschooling for Preschool: One Month Later

It’s been a month since we started homeschooling for preschool and I’m so proud of my daughter every day. Not only is she excited to learn, but it turns out that she’s a sponge for knowledge. She surprises me by sharing things that she knows that I didn’t specifically teach her.

The other day she shared:

Red means stop. Yellow means wait. Green means go.

This reminded me of when I was in first grade. Mrs. Anderson taught us short poems and songs to to teach us about concepts. One of her poems was about traffic lights too! I absolutely loved having Dixie Anderson as a teacher. It was really nice to be reminded of her class while teaching K.

We use Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool as a basis for K’s lessons, and they often utilize Starfall. She sometimes asks me to watch the videos – she likes to click and explore to see what she can find.

One thing I’m really enjoying is incorporating educational play into homeschooling for preschool. She uses busy boards and busy books – she’s playing and having fun, but she’s also learning!

K is so excited for Halloween. We made a countdown chain and decorated cookies. She enjoyed adding sprinkles to all of the cookies and eating the icing, even though neither of us were fans of the cookies themselves. Everyday she plays dress up and she asks for Halloween food so I creatively figure out ways to make her regular food “scary” for a three year old. Making jack-o-lantern faces on everything from toast (cutting out pieces) to scrambled eggs (adding shapes cut out of sliced cheese) seems to do the trick.

I haven’t figured out a daily homeschooling schedule yet, and I want to incorporate more into her schooling, but I’m pretty happy with our first month. There’s definitely a learning curve when it comes to homeschooling, but I’m sure we’ll get better at it.
